This technical report presents findings from the BIOSTEMI randomized trial, which compares long-term outcomes of biodegradable polymer sirolimus-eluting stents and durable polymer everolimus-eluting stents in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The study includes a 5-year follow-up of 1,300 STEMI patients treated across 10 centers in Switzerland. The primary endpoint assessed is target lesion failure (TLF) at both the 12-month and 60-month follow-ups, defined as a composite of cardiac death, target vessel-myocardial re-infarction, and clinically indicated target lesion revascularization. Results indicate that Orsiro™ stents demonstrate significantly lower rates of TLF compared to Xience stents at the 5-year mark. The report also details patient characteristics, study design, and secondary endpoints evaluated within the trial context, highlighting the comparative safety and efficacy of the two stent types over a substantial follow-up period.
