Implementation of Evidence-Based Standard Setting for AP Exams

This technical report details the implementation of Evidence-Based Standard Setting (EBSS) for Advanced Placement (AP) Exams. The AP Program allows high school students to take college-level courses and potentially earn college credit. The report outlines how AP maintains high standards for exam scores, which reflect college-level achievement. It describes the evolution of standard-setting methodologies, moving from college grade distributions to EBSS, which utilizes large-scale student performance data and input from college faculty. EBSS aims to ensure that cut scores align with predetermined performance standards while addressing normative, content, and predictive goals. The report presents the types of evidence collected through EBSS, including test taker performance characteristics, score distributions, and longitudinal studies comparing AP students with non-AP students.
