This article presents a technical report on the evaluation of chemical looping combustion (CLC) as a bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) technology, specifically through tests conducted on woody biomass in a 150-kW pilot unit at SINTEF Energy Research in Norway. The study aims to assess the performance parameters of a relatively large CLC unit operating in auto-thermal mode, utilizing ilmenite as an oxygen carrier. It details the design of the pilot unit, which consists of interconnected circulating fluidized bed reactors, and discusses the implications of omitting a carbon stripper in achieving CO2 capture efficiencies. The findings indicate that high capture efficiencies exceeding 95% can be achieved with biomass, while a carbon stripper is necessary for fuels with lower volatile content. The report also compares the performance of biomass with petcoke, highlighting the operational challenges and efficiencies associated with the CLC process. Overall, the study contributes to the understanding of CLC's potential in carbon capture technologies.
