This case study documents Santander's innovative approach to combating human trafficking and modern slavery through the integration of artificial intelligence into its anti-money laundering (AML) program. The bank recognized the limitations of traditional rule-based systems and sought to enhance its financial crime detection capabilities. The project focused on utilizing machine learning to identify complex typologies associated with human trafficking, as traditional methods proved inadequate. The deployment of ThetaRay’s AI-powered transaction monitoring solution has streamlined the detection of suspicious activities, enabling quicker response times and uncovering a human trafficking network that traditional systems would have likely missed. The long-term benefits include a proactive risk management approach and plans to extend AI applications to other areas, such as child sexual exploitation. Santander's efforts have been recognized with an award for the Best Use of Data for Human Trafficking Detection, marking a significant step forward in ethical banking and the protection of vulnerable individuals.
