This technical report presents research conducted by the TIAA Institute, which examines the perspectives of college and university presidents regarding the roles and societal impacts of higher education during turbulent times. The study involved interviews with 15 leaders from primarily small to medium-sized private institutions, focusing on their views about institutional missions, social impact, and responses to current challenges. Key themes identified include mission-centric leadership, the need to reclaim the public narrative surrounding higher education, financial sustainability concerns, and governance challenges. The report highlights the pressures faced by institutions, such as financial strains and shifting public perceptions, while also noting the importance of local engagement and environmental initiatives. Additionally, it discusses the evolving governance frameworks and the impact of anti-higher education sentiments on public trust. The findings emphasize the critical role of higher education in fostering democracy and social mobility, as well as the necessity for institutions to adapt to changing societal needs.
