AI-Driven Prescription Renewal Process Improvement

This case study details the implementation of an AI-driven prescription renewal solution at Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of medication data entry in their Epic electronic health record (EHR) system. NGHS faced challenges with over 2,000 daily prescription renewal requests, which required extensive manual data entry due to discrepancies in prescription instructions. The existing sig-mapping table was time-consuming to maintain, resulting in only 38% of sigs being populated automatically. The introduction of DrFirst's AI technology allowed for the normalization of sigs and the pre-population of drug information, significantly improving the match rate to 93%. This advancement not only reduced the need for manual entry but also minimized the risk of medication errors and clinician burnout. The results demonstrated a 54% increase in clean sigs imported, saving clinicians approximately 321 hours in the first four months and enhancing patient safety by allowing for better monitoring of medication dosages.
