F5 Networks VM Storage Optimization Case Study

This case study details the challenges faced by F5 Networks regarding virtual machine (VM) storage performance, which hindered the effective scaling of their Product Development VM environment for the BIG-IP platform. The existing traditional storage systems were not cost-effective for expanding to support thousands of VMs, leading to performance bottlenecks and wasted capacity. F5 sought a VM-aware storage solution that would enhance performance and simplify management. The solution implemented was the Tintri VMstore T540, which provided consistent low latency and allowed for the deployment of hundreds of VMs efficiently. The results showed significant improvements, including the ability to run over 1,500 VMs with reduced operational costs and a smaller data center footprint. The ease of use of the Tintri VMstore also eliminated the need for extensive administrator training, further facilitating efficient scaling in F5's Seattle Product Development Lab.
