This report presents the findings of the 2024 CPA Career Satisfaction Survey, which aimed to investigate the factors influencing career satisfaction among accounting professionals. The survey, conducted by Tri-Merit Specialty Tax Services in collaboration with Accountants Forward and HB Publishing & Marketing Company, included responses from 238 accounting professionals across various demographics. The results indicate a significant talent shortage in the accounting industry, with many professionals leaving the field for reasons not solely related to long hours or pay. The report identifies key drivers of career satisfaction, such as the importance of varied work assignments, supportive firm culture, and respect for work-life balance. Interestingly, many accountants who work long hours report high satisfaction levels, while some who work fewer hours express dissatisfaction. The findings highlight the need for firms to reassess their strategies for improving employee satisfaction, particularly among mid-career managers who reported lower satisfaction levels compared to their peers.
