This report presents a comprehensive review of brake performance monitoring systems (BPMS) and their application for both current conventionally driven vehicles and future automated vehicles. The objective of the research is to investigate the feasibility of using BPMS to enhance inspection efficiency and reduce costs associated with traditional roller brake tests during safety inspections and periodic technical inspections (PTI). The report includes a market review identifying nine BPMS available for trailers, along with stakeholder engagement findings. It discusses the limitations of current BPMS, particularly their inability to replace roller brake tests due to their focus on service brake efficiency alone. The report outlines the variability in current BPMS systems and recommends revised technical requirements to improve standards.
