This technical report presents the findings from the IN2 project involving Turntide's High Rotor-Pole Switched Reluctance Motor (HRSRM) system, which aims to enhance energy efficiency in HVAC systems. The report outlines the development of advanced control strategies in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to evaluate energy savings across various U.S. climates. Turntide's HRSRM can achieve up to 95% peak motor efficiency, significantly improving the performance of commercial rooftop units (RTUs). The report details three advanced control strategies that were tested, including staged fan speeds and continuous fan modulation, which were designed to optimize energy savings. The outcomes include 64 unique model runs and annual energy savings metrics for each strategy across different climates. The report emphasizes the relative energy savings achieved compared to baseline settings, providing valuable insights into the potential for energy efficiency improvements in commercial HVAC applications.
