This case study details the collaboration between a Department of Defense genomics research facility and TVAR Solutions to implement a highly scalable compute and storage solution. The facility, which processes over 25,000 whole human genome samples annually, required a robust infrastructure to manage vast amounts of sensitive data. The project involved deploying a 200-node high-performance computing cluster with 24 petabytes of Isilon storage, phased in over five years. TVAR Solutions worked closely with the client and other vendors, such as Dell and Illumina, to ensure the solution met the specific needs of the genomic research environment. The implementation included a multi-tiered storage system to efficiently handle genomic sequencing data and a tape-based cold storage solution for archiving. The partnership resulted in the lab becoming one of the top sequencing facilities globally, demonstrating the importance of tailored technology solutions in advancing genomic research.
