This case study outlines a significant incident at a solar panel manufacturing facility in the southeastern United States, where a $5 billion investment led to the construction of one of the largest solar panel factories in the nation. The facility's operation placed unprecedented demands on the local utility's distribution system, resulting in the installation of 11 new transformers. However, shortly after the facility was energized, overheating issues arose, leading to multiple transformer fires and substantial risks of financial losses and production delays. To address these challenges, the utility implemented UbiGrid digital transformer monitors for real-time diagnostics, which quickly identified the root cause of the overheating as improperly bundled conductors. The case study emphasizes the importance of real-time monitoring in preventing further transformer failures and highlights the utility's strategy to expand monitoring across its grid to enhance resilience and support economic development.
