COVID-19 Mortality in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients

This research article evaluates the mortality rates of solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients hospitalized in Spain due to COVID-19 during 2020. The study utilizes a nationwide, retrospective, observational analysis of adults hospitalized with COVID-19, stratifying the data according to SOT status. A total of 117,694 adults were hospitalized, with 491 identified as SOT recipients. The overall mortality rate for SOT recipients was found to be 13.8%. The analysis revealed that lung transplantation was an independent factor associated with increased mortality risk, while kidney, liver, and heart transplantations did not show a significant association. The findings suggest that the mortality rate for SOT recipients was comparable to that of the general population, except for lung transplant recipients, who exhibited worse outcomes. The article emphasizes the need for focused management strategies for lung transplant recipients affected by COVID-19.
