Badge-Based Equipment Access Management Implementation

This case study outlines the implementation of a badge-based equipment access management solution by United Rentals for a national wood products company in Oregon. The company planned a $700 million capital project to upgrade its mill, focusing on increasing safety and optimizing fleet utilization. The project required managing access for over 700 craft workers and 200 pieces of equipment. The solution involved using RFID-enabled worker ID badges for equipment access, allowing workers to tap their badges on RFID card readers. This streamlined approach replaced the need for PIN codes, enhancing security and efficiency. The digital worker profiles generated from the ID badges are integrated into Total Control®, United Rentals' cloud-based management platform, enabling managers to assign roles and access rights based on qualifications. The implementation aims to prevent untrained operators from accessing equipment, improve accountability, and optimize fleet utilization, ultimately reducing costs and keeping the project on schedule.
