Global Map of Electricity and Gas Distribution Network Companies

This technical report presents a global map of distribution system operators (DSOs) for electricity and gas, analyzing their roles in the energy transition. The paper examines 194 electricity and 67 gas utilities across 194 countries, detailing their size, ownership, integration levels, performance, and innovation capabilities. It highlights significant variations in the distribution sector worldwide, noting that many utilities face challenges in promoting the energy transition due to differing starting points. The report discusses the crucial investments needed in grid infrastructure to meet net zero targets, emphasizing the disconnect between renewable energy investments and grid enhancements. It outlines the methodology used for the analysis and identifies broad patterns in DSO characteristics by continent and economic development level.
