This article is a research report that investigates the optimization of courtyard microclimates through adaptable shading and evaporative cooling systems in hot Mediterranean climates. It emphasizes the importance of enhancing thermal comfort in transitional outdoor spaces adjacent to buildings, particularly in warm regions like southern Spain. The study assesses the impact of shading and misting systems on mean radiant temperature and relative humidity, using field measurements to analyze their effectiveness in improving user comfort levels. Results indicate a significant temperature reduction of up to 11.7 °C compared to external reference points, and a 100% increase in the percentage of hours within comfort ranges during heat waves. The research presents a comparative analysis of standalone and integrated passive cooling strategies, aiming to provide effective solutions for maintaining comfort during both diurnal and nocturnal cycles in high-temperature scenarios. The findings contribute to understanding low-cost strategies for enhancing outdoor thermal comfort.
