This document is a retrospective cohort study investigating the incidence of diabetes following SARS-CoV-2 infection and the implications of COVID-19 vaccination, involving 16 million individuals in England. The study aims to examine the association between COVID-19 and various types of diabetes, including type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as gestational and non-specific diabetes. It utilizes linked electronic health records to identify new diabetes diagnoses among individuals diagnosed with COVID-19. The cohort includes adults aged 18 to 110 years, registered with general practitioners for at least six months prior to the baseline. The findings indicate that the incidence of type 2 diabetes increases post-COVID-19, with adjusted hazard ratios revealing a decline in incidence over time. Vaccination against COVID-19 appears to reduce the risk of diabetes incidence compared to unvaccinated individuals. The study underscores the significant public health implications of diabetes following COVID-19 and the role of vaccination in mitigating this risk.
