This report quantifies the economic effects associated with the industrial biotechnology (IB) sector in Europe, focusing on employment and value generation. It outlines the direct economic impact, which includes jobs related to core IB activities such as enzyme and antibiotic production. Additionally, it details upstream effects from suppliers, downstream effects from processing IB outputs, and induced effects from employee spending. The report states that total employment in the IB value chain is approximately 486,000 full-time equivalents (FTEs), with 94,000 FTEs in the IB sector itself, 269,000 in upstream activities, 98,000 downstream, and 25,000 induced jobs. It also presents a forecast for 2030, predicting employment could exceed one million FTEs under different growth scenarios. The report emphasizes the increasing significance of the IB sector in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, projecting its contribution to the European economy to range between €57.5 billion and €99.5 billion by 2030.
