Community-Engaged Learning for Online Courses

This research manuscript discusses the integration of community-engaged learning (CEL) into online courses, focusing on ensuring quality outcomes for students and communities. It presents insights from three instructors at the University of Utah who have successfully implemented CEL in their courses. The article outlines four key topics: finding mutually beneficial partnerships, managing expectations, overseeing student-partner interactions, and following up with students. It emphasizes the importance of creating equitable partnerships with community organizations and highlights the challenges and rewards associated with these collaborations. The authors note that while online CEL courses have gained popularity, especially post-COVID-19, much of the existing best practices pertain to traditional in-person classes. The manuscript also discusses pedagogical and ethical considerations for online CEL, providing practical strategies for effective community engagement. The findings suggest that CEL can enhance student retention and community involvement, fostering critical skills and connections that benefit both students and the community.
