This case study details the implementation of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI or UV-C) technology in a North Carolina call center to enhance indoor air quality (IAQ) and reduce maintenance costs associated with the HVAC system. The facility manager, Rick Hansen, identified persistent tenant complaints regarding dusty HVAC vents and conducted a thorough investigation that revealed mold contamination. Following a $450,000 remediation project to clean the HVAC system, Hansen collaborated with Clark Air Systems to install UV-C fixtures that effectively inactivate airborne and surface-bound microbes. The UV-C technology not only improved air quality but also enhanced cooling capacity and energy efficiency. The case study outlines the operational changes made, including the installation of high-output UV-C lamps, which led to a significant reduction in maintenance calls and improved airflow. The findings suggest that UV-C technology can lead to substantial energy savings and a healthier work environment for employees.
