This case study details the modernization of the ServiceNow Configuration Management Database (CMDB) for a major electric energy company in the U.S. The client faced challenges with their CMDB due to extensive customizations that resulted in a cluttered database with orphans and duplicates. This situation diminished the effectiveness of reports and hindered the use of advanced features. The study outlines the migration of customizations to out-of-the-box (OOB) structures, the implementation of a Common Service Data Model framework, and the transition to the Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE) for better management of Configuration Items (CIs). The results included improved operational efficiency, enhanced data security, and a more service-centric organizational model. The client is now better positioned for future success with a reliable CMDB that supports critical areas such as ServiceNow’s Application Portfolio Management and Service Mapping. Additionally, the client has gained capabilities in asset management and data accuracy, aligning with best practices from ServiceNow.
