This research article presents initial results from an experimental campaign focused on predicting the response of short piles subjected to lateral monotonic loads in dense sand at the Blessington test site in Ireland. The study aims to expand the existing database of lateral field tests for monopiles with low slenderness ratios, specifically those with ratios less than 4.5, which are relevant for offshore wind foundation designs. The article details the methodologies employed, including traditional approaches like the API and PISA rule, which were found to underestimate pile stiffness and ultimate capacity. In contrast, a novel three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D FEA) approach developed at Trinity College Dublin demonstrated accurate predictions of pile responses. The experimental campaign involved testing six piles with varying slenderness ratios, and the results indicated that the 3D FEA approach provided superior predictions compared to traditional methods. The findings contribute to the understanding of monopile behavior under lateral loading conditions.
