This white paper discusses the crowded desktop problem in healthcare, where clinicians manage multiple clinical support tools alongside their electronic health records (EHRs). It outlines the challenges posed by the proliferation of third-party solutions that, while beneficial, complicate access to essential patient information. A survey of U.S. clinicians revealed that many avoid using these external tools due to the extra steps required, contributing to clinician fatigue and burnout. The paper emphasizes the importance of addressing care gaps to improve patient outcomes and suggests that a successful solution must integrate care gap information into a single workflow, minimizing additional burdens on providers. The Veradigm Payer Insights (VPI) system is presented as a potential solution, offering timely, patient-specific alerts directly within EHRs to streamline workflows and enhance patient care. By consolidating information from multiple payers, VPI aims to alleviate the crowded desktop issue and improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery.
