This report presents findings from a study analyzing the performance of four commercially available bronchoscopes: the Verathon BFlex 2, Ambu aScope 4, Ambu aScope 5, and the Olympus BF-1TH190. A series of benchtop tests were conducted to compare suction strength and tool insertion force among these devices. The results indicated that the BFlex 2 exhibited superior suction performance, achieving 125% higher suction than the aScope 5 during tests involving viscous fluids. Additionally, the BFlex 2 required significantly lower insertion forces when advancing tools, particularly performing 68% better than the aScope 5 with standard biopsy forceps. The report emphasizes the clinical relevance of these findings, particularly in ICU settings where effective airway clearance and tool delivery are critical. The BFlex 2 was also noted for being the only single-use scope able to pass certain tools through the distal tip, further showcasing its performance advantages. Overall, the results indicate that the BFlex 2 outperforms its competitors in key attributes important for clinical practice.
