This case study details the challenges faced by a manufacturer of autonomous robots designed for use in SMART factories. The robots are required to operate continuously, carrying parts or finished goods while maximizing efficiency and minimizing downtime. The primary objectives included maximizing the range between recharges by reducing conversion losses and optimizing space for larger batteries and sensors by minimizing size and weight. The power system utilized a 48V battery stack that powered the motor drive directly, with the need to convert this input into three 6V outputs and one 12V output for various components. The solution implemented four arrays of Vicor PRM and VTM converters, achieving high efficiency conversion rates exceeding 92.7%. The case study emphasizes the benefits of the Vicor solution, including a compact design and significant power efficiency, which contribute to extended run-time for the robots.
