This case study details the implementation of Vicor's high-performance power modules in high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). HALE UAVs, designed to operate at high altitudes for extended durations, serve various applications including surveillance and communication relay. The document outlines the challenges faced, such as the need for scalable power, reliable design, and compact power supply solutions. Vicor's DCM™ DC-DC converter modules are proposed as a solution, capable of delivering high power levels while minimizing space and weight requirements. The study highlights the efficiency of these converters, achieving a peak efficiency of 96%, and their modularity, which allows for easy adjustments to power needs. Additionally, it describes the configuration of the power delivery network, emphasizing redundancy and reliability in power sourcing. The use of multiple paralleled converters ensures efficient operation and system resilience, aligning with the design goals for HALE UAVs.
