This case study details the challenges and solutions associated with upgrading a vehicle-mounted radio system to enhance voice and data communications on the battlefield. The primary requirement was to provide a well-regulated 48V power supply capable of delivering over 1kW, while also fitting within a limited existing space and utilizing an existing cold wall for thermal dissipation. The Vicor high-performance power modules, specifically the MIL-COTS DCM3623, were identified as a suitable solution due to their lightweight and compact design, achieving a power density of 800W/in3. The DCM3623 not only meets the power requirements but also enhances efficiency, reduces heat generation, and improves reliability in vetronics applications. Key features of the solution include high peak RF output power, compact and efficient power delivery, and low-profile packaging that effectively utilizes the cold wall for thermal management.
