This case study outlines the challenges faced by inspection UAVs and the Vicor solutions that address these challenges. Inspection UAVs are required to operate in harsh environments while maintaining reliability and maneuverability to access difficult terrains. Key objectives include extending flight range and time, minimizing size and weight, and ensuring reliability to reduce the risk of failure during operation. Vicor's high-efficiency power modules are designed to meet these needs by providing high power density, which allows for a smaller form factor and lower weight, thus maximizing sensor payloads. The modules also minimize electromagnetic interference and utilize zero-voltage switching (ZVS) topology to achieve efficiencies of up to 98%. The study details how Vicor's DCM DC-DC converters and ZVS regulator modules are particularly suited for inspection UAVs, enabling them to operate effectively across a wide input range while ensuring safe landing and recovery.
