This research article presents a systematic literature review focused on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the software development life cycle (SDLC) with an emphasis on sustainability. The authors explore the application of AI across various stages of the SDLC, including requirements elicitation, analysis/design, development, testing, and deployment. The study synthesizes findings from 34 primary studies, detailing commonly used AI approaches aimed at automating requirements formulation, designing sustainable software, enhancing energy efficiency, and effectively testing software. The literature review identifies environmental sustainability as the most prevalent focus, particularly concerning energy efficiency and electronic waste. Furthermore, the research highlights gaps in existing literature, notably the lack of attention to social sustainability and the integration of AI into developer toolkits. The article aims to bridge the gap between AI integration and sustainability in software development, addressing the potential positive and negative impacts of AI on sustainability within the SDLC.
