Impact of UPSTART Reading on Preschool Literacy Skills

This technical report evaluates the impact of the UPSTART Reading program on preschool children's early literacy skills in rural Utah. The study employs a randomized control trial design, comparing preschoolers using UPSTART Reading software with those using UPSTART Math. Standardized assessments of early literacy skills were conducted before and after the program. Results indicate significant improvements in letter knowledge and phonological awareness among participants in the UPSTART Reading group compared to the control group, after adjusting for prior knowledge and other variables. However, no differences were found in vocabulary, oral language, or listening comprehension between the two groups. The report discusses the importance of early literacy skills for later academic success and highlights the challenges faced by rural children in accessing quality early education. It also addresses the role of educational technology in bridging the gap for underserved populations, emphasizing the necessity for rigorous evaluation of such programs to ensure their effectiveness.
