Improving Early Math Skills Upstart Program Effects

This technical report evaluates the Upstart program, a computer-based initiative aimed at enhancing early math skills among pre-kindergarten children in Nevada. The study employs a randomized control trial design to assess the program's impact on children's mathematical abilities. Participants in the treatment group utilized Upstart math software, while the control group engaged with Upstart reading software. Standardized assessments were conducted before the program, after pre-kindergarten, and at the end of kindergarten. The findings indicate significant differences in math concept scores between the two groups, highlighting the effectiveness of the Upstart math intervention. The report discusses the critical role of early math skills in school readiness and their correlation with later academic success. It also addresses the challenges faced by diverse communities in fostering early math development, emphasizing the importance of educational technology in providing access to learning resources for children who may lack opportunities for early academic engagement.
