This report provides an analysis of ransomware targeting across various Australian industries based on threat intelligence collected over the previous year. It outlines the concentration of ransomware activity, identifying five key sectors: Technology, Financial Services, Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Energy, which exhibit the highest levels of targeting. The analysis indicates that Technology is the most frequently targeted sector, serving as both a direct target for extortion and a gateway to other organizations. The report categorizes industries into pressure bands, highlighting those facing systemic exposure to ransomware attacks. It also discusses the strategic factors that make certain sectors attractive to ransomware operators, including operational disruption risks and data sensitivity. The dataset includes 73 ransomware entities, reflecting a diverse range of targeting behaviors across 18 industries. The findings suggest that understanding these targeting patterns is crucial for organizations to prioritize their cybersecurity measures effectively.
