This technical report details the implementation of a real-time stormwater control system at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) by Williams Creek Management. The project aimed to modernize stormwater management across a 38-acre detention basin, transitioning from manual control by airport staff to an automated system. The new system integrates water level sensors, weather forecast data, and gate position sensors to dynamically regulate outflows, ensuring optimal stormwater retention and controlled discharge. A significant challenge addressed was the glycol runoff from aircraft de-icing, necessitating careful water quality monitoring to meet environmental standards. The partnership with OptiRTC facilitated the integration of the real-time control platform with existing infrastructure. The outcome is a more adaptive stormwater management system that enhances CVG's capacity to manage extreme weather events, mitigate flood risks, and improve water quality treatment. This project exemplifies the role of smart infrastructure in enhancing operational efficiency and environmental responsibility in airport stormwater management.
