This original article presents a retrospective cohort study examining the relationship between social determinants of health and cardiovascular complications in individuals with type 2 diabetes in Colombia. The study involved 583 patients treated at a national-level referral hospital for military personnel between September 2021 and December 2022. The research aimed to identify how factors such as urban residency, educational level, and access to diabetes education influence the risk of coronary artery disease and other complications. Results indicated that urban residency and higher educational levels were associated with increased risks of coronary artery disease, while lack of access to physical activity spaces was linked to higher risks of diabetic nephropathy and cerebrovascular disease. The findings suggest that diabetes management programs should consider social determinants of health to address cardiovascular complications effectively and highlight the need for further population-based studies to clarify these associations.
