This case study documents the harmonised Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for air conditioners and household refrigerators in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The objective of these standards is to enhance appliance energy efficiency, decrease electricity demand, and limit emissions from refrigerants with high global warming potential. Approved in 2023, the MEPS apply to non-ducted single-split air conditioners up to 16 kW and residential refrigerators between 10 and 1,500 litres, introducing two tiers of performance standards. The initiative aims to reduce regulatory fragmentation and facilitate cross-border trade while aligning energy efficiency with climate goals. The MEPS support broader regional energy strategies and complement national energy efficiency action plans. Implementation relies on national governments integrating the standards into domestic legislation, with enforcement through customs and product testing. The expected results include significant reductions in electricity use and CO₂ emissions, alongside substantial financial savings for consumers in the region. Lessons learned emphasize the importance of regional collaboration and capacity building.
