General-Use Software Security and Governance Improvements

This document is a case study that outlines the engagement between Windval and a Fortune 200 enterprise in the energy and utilities sector. The project aimed to establish governance, lifecycle ownership, and a secure distribution model for general-use, open-source, and freeware software. The objective was to mitigate security risks associated with unmanaged software, including version sprawl, end-of-life titles, and unpatched installations. Windval's team engaged key stakeholders across various departments to assess the existing environment and identify gaps in governance and policy. They defined a remediation roadmap that included the establishment of a secure repository for approved software and improvements in inventory management and lifecycle processes. The case study details the risks posed by unmanaged software and the steps taken to create a more secure and efficient software management framework within the enterprise. The results demonstrate how the organization can better manage its software assets while reducing security vulnerabilities.
