This white paper examines the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) through the lens of cross-border trade in mango purée. It highlights the significance of regional economic communities (RECs) such as the East African Community (EAC), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) as foundational elements for AfCFTA's success. The paper outlines key insights derived from a case study facilitated by the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation, focusing on the challenges and opportunities in the mango purée trade across these RECs. It discusses the necessity of integrated customs processes, mutual recognition of standards, and the importance of addressing domestic taxes and non-tariff barriers to enhance trade efficiency. The findings aim to inform policy-makers and stakeholders on actionable steps to strengthen AfCFTA implementation by leveraging existing regional frameworks and addressing persistent trade bottlenecks.
