This research article examines the role of digital technologies in the functioning of rural institutions and communities, particularly focusing on the transition from traditional to 'smart' institutions. It outlines the significant developmental challenges faced by rural areas, driven by factors such as the outmigration of young people and shifts in rural economies. To address these challenges, the concept of 'smart rural development' is promoted, which integrates technological advancements to enhance community engagement and spatial justice. The article presents findings from an online survey conducted with Polish institutions involved in rural development, revealing that while digital technologies are widely utilized, local interactions have not fully transitioned to digital platforms. The research emphasizes the importance of institutions in shaping social relations and fostering spatial justice by effectively integrating digital technologies, adapting to local needs, and enhancing residents' digital skills. The study contributes to understanding how smart institutions can address contemporary rural challenges and promote equitable development.
