This case study details the implementation of YubiKey solutions by the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Pölten to enhance cybersecurity measures for privileged IT and administrative accounts. Established in 1785, the diocese comprises 422 parishes and employs over 900 individuals. The document outlines the critical need for improved security following a cyberattack on the Diocese of Virginia, which resulted in significant financial loss. To mitigate risks associated with legacy authentication methods, the diocese sought to eliminate passwords and adopt modern technologies. The YubiKey 5 Series was chosen for its phishing-resistant capabilities and support for passwordless authentication. The deployment process involved collaboration with Antares-NetlogiX, enabling the integration of YubiKey across both legacy and cloud systems, including Microsoft Entra ID. The case study highlights the gradual rollout of the YubiKey, user adaptation, and the overall positive impact on security and operational efficiency, paving the way for future enhancements in the diocese's cybersecurity framework.
