This case study details the deployment of checkout-free technology at Tropicana Field's Short Stop bar by the Tampa Bay Rays in collaboration with Zippin. The initiative aimed to enhance the fan experience by streamlining checkout processes and creating a more social environment. The decision to convert the busiest bar into a checkout-free experience was influenced by successful implementations at other venues. Initial concerns were addressed, and the project was executed with a solid plan, resulting in the store's debut during the 2023 season opener. The implementation led to significant fan engagement, with over 82,500 fans utilizing the checkout-free system and achieving a high satisfaction rating of 92.5%. The project demonstrated a return on investment in less than two years, with notable increases in sales and transaction rates compared to previous seasons. The study emphasizes the importance of employee roles in enhancing customer interactions within a checkout-free environment.
