This research article investigates the comparative benefits of communication-assisted sensing and sensing-assisted communication within the framework of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). The paper outlines the significance of ISAC as a pivotal technology for future wireless systems, particularly in the context of 6G mobile communication. It discusses how communication-assisted sensing utilizes existing cellular infrastructure to enhance environmental perception, while sensing-assisted communication improves communication efficiency in high-frequency and high-mobility scenarios. The authors present a detailed analysis of the advantages and challenges associated with both approaches, emphasizing the potential of communication-assisted sensing in large-scale applications due to its cost-effectiveness and extensive coverage. An example of channel knowledge map (CKM)-assisted beam tracking is provided to illustrate the practical benefits of communication-assisted sensing in complex vehicle-to-everything (V2X) scenarios. The article aims to determine which method holds greater research significance and performance gain in future applications, such as intelligent transportation systems and smart cities.
