Carcinogenic Exposure and Decontamination Procedures for Firefighters

This technical report discusses the inherent dangers faced by firefighters, particularly the long-term risks associated with carcinogenic exposure due to inadequate decontamination procedures. It outlines findings from a study conducted using the ESO Data Collaborative, which highlights that firefighters are at a higher risk for cancer due to exposure to combustion byproducts. The study examined on-scene decontamination practices among over 31,000 personnel from various U.S. agencies, finding that only a small percentage documented adherence to best practices.
