This white paper discusses the implementation of TrackEMS, an electronic communication system designed to enhance patient handoffs between emergency medical services (EMS) and hospital emergency departments. The document outlines the challenges faced by EMS agencies, particularly in managing increased call volumes and ensuring efficient patient handoffs. It presents a case study involving Indian River County Fire Rescue, which sought to improve patient handoffs while maintaining quality care. The paper details the project's objectives, including reducing time to treatment and improving clinical data accuracy. Data collected before and after TrackEMS implementation showed a significant decrease in the mean time to clear patients from 22.4 minutes to 17.7 minutes, representing a 21% reduction. The findings indicate that TrackEMS not only streamlined communication but also improved overall emergency department operations, allowing for better patient care and quicker turnaround times for EMS units. The paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of effective communication and timely data transmission in emergency healthcare settings.
