This study examines the current landscape of creator journalism, highlighting key trends and statistics regarding self-publishing among journalists. It reveals that half of creator journalists have been self-publishing for over five years, indicating a mature movement within the media ecosystem. The study outlines that autonomy is a primary motivator for creators, with 57% prioritizing creative freedom over financial incentives. Additionally, it notes that creator journalists are significantly more likely than their traditional counterparts to consider social media essential for their reporting. The research also discusses the relationship between creator journalists and public relations professionals, revealing that while many creators receive PR pitches, a large percentage find them irrelevant. The methodology includes an online survey distributed to journalists, resulting in 1,515 valid responses, with a focus on U.S.-based creators. The findings provide insights into the motivations, challenges, and publishing practices of creator journalists in today's media landscape.
