This report is a Consensus Study Report that addresses the state of the science of cumulative impact assessment (CIA) and provides recommendations for its application across various levels, including community, state, regional, tribal, and national. The report outlines the importance of CIA as a tool for decision-makers to evaluate multiple factors affecting health and well-being, particularly in the context of environmental exposures. It details the evolution of CIA at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), emphasizing the need for a holistic approach that considers both chemical and nonchemical stressors. The committee engaged with over 100 individuals to gather input, which informed the recommended multistep process for CIA, including meaningful engagement, assessment of stressors and resources, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation. The report also highlights the necessity for timely decision-making and the use of existing tools and practices to enhance the effectiveness of CIA in improving community health outcomes.
