This whitepaper examines the current landscape of Islamic banking in Malaysia, highlighting both opportunities for growth and challenges to consumer acceptance. It outlines the national strategic direction and favorable government policies that support the development of Islamic finance, identifying it as a key sector under the Financial Sector Blueprint 2022-2026. The paper presents data indicating that Islamic financing accounted for 41% of Malaysia's total banking loans, reflecting a significant increase from previous years. However, it also addresses the challenges posed by consumer perceptions, particularly the belief that Islamic banking products are less competitive compared to conventional options. The methodology includes both primary and secondary research, focusing on consumer attitudes and usage of Islamic banking products. The findings suggest that while there is a growing acceptance of Islamic banking among consumers, particularly among Muslims, barriers such as lack of knowledge and conventional customer mindsets remain significant hurdles to broader adoption.
