Circular Carbon for the Dutch Chemical and Fuel Sectors

This summary report outlines a research project titled 'Circular Carbon for the Dutch Chemical and Fuel Sectors', commissioned by SmartPort and conducted by TNO. The report addresses the significant challenge faced by the Dutch chemical and fuel sectors in transitioning to a climate-neutral and circular economy, in alignment with the European Union's goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. It emphasizes the need for collaboration among industry partners to replace fossil raw materials with circular alternatives. The study investigates the future requirements for circular raw materials and the integration of renewable energy sources into the production processes. It identifies opportunities for synergy between the chemical and fuel sectors and discusses the role of the Port of Rotterdam as a potential circular carbon hub. The report also highlights uncertainties and barriers to this transition, as well as the necessary policy frameworks at both EU and national levels to facilitate progress.
