This report is a technical document prepared by TNO-Advisory Group for the Dutch Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth. It aims to support policymakers and stakeholders in the emerging CO2 storage industry while addressing EU reporting obligations under the Net Zero Industry Act. The report provides an initial assessment of the offshore underground CO2 storage capacity in depleted gas fields in the Netherlands, estimating a practical storage capacity range of approximately 1260 to 1750 Mega tons across 46 to 124 storage sites. It details the methodology used to estimate potential storage capacity, including theoretical, effective, and practical capacities, and discusses factors that may influence these estimates, such as economic and legislative criteria. The report also highlights the planned Porthos and Aramis CO2 projects and their expected contributions to EU goals for CO2 transport and storage. It suggests further studies to refine capacity estimates and considers spatial restrictions and aquifer storage capacity as factors not included in this analysis.
