This case study details Ska Brewing's initiative to replace single-use plastic packaging with sustainable fiber-based alternatives. The brewery, located in Durango, Colorado, sought to minimize its environmental impact by moving away from plastic six-pack rings. In collaboration with WestRock, Ska Brewing adopted the CanCollar® Classic, a paperboard packaging solution that uses 95% less plastic and integrates seamlessly into their manufacturing processes. The installation of WestRock's Corsair™ packaging machine marked Ska Brewing as the first craft brewery in North America to utilize this technology. The transition has led to increased efficiencies in production and positive customer feedback regarding the new sustainable packaging. Additionally, the case study discusses the implications of Colorado's 2022 legislation requiring manufacturers to support statewide recycling programs, which may lead to reduced costs for breweries using environmentally friendly packaging. Overall, Ska Brewing's efforts reflect a commitment to sustainability and innovation in the craft brewing industry.
